Faust

Cyprus : Faust

Stephanos Droussiotis work (play) is a liberal adaptation of J.W. Goethe’s tragedy.

In an age where the existence of God has been greatly questioned or deemed irrelevant by many, Faust can be examined through a different scope. Effectively, Faust is in constant fight with neither Devil nor God, but ultimately with his own self.

Faust is a charming and complex character. He ultimately chooses life over suicide and through trading his soul to the Devil he secures a real taste of life: love, the act of giving and receiving, betrayal, knowledge and isolation are among the many life traits he gets to experience.

About the play:

« As each time and era develops its own perception of the greatest works of art from the past, so does it also provide the definitive standard by which to measure its own intellectual thought and spirit. While this perception may change and differ over the eras, the value of classic works remains ever-lasting, ever unquestionable and ever intact. It is for this reason, that we are fundamentally bound to interpret these works as an account for the intellectual thought and spirit of our own time and age* ».

In an age where the existence of God has been greatly questioned or deemed irrelevant by many, Faust can be examined through a different scope. Effectively, Faust is in constant fight with neither Devil nor God, but ultimately with his own self. Beyond the theological and metaphysical scope of the story, this is a work that keeps its dramatic force intact and depicts the never-ending agony of the human existence and the dramatic conflict with oneself.

From the heights of notoriety to the depths of despair and disappointment, Faust is a charming and complex character. He ultimately chooses life over suicide and through trading his soul to the Devil he secures a real taste of life: love, the act of giving and receiving, betrayal, knowledge and isolation are among the many life traits he gets to experience.

Following his conception and direction of In Camera (2011), based on J.P. Sartre’s No Exit and Letter to Orestes (2012) by Iakovos Campanellis, young director Stephanos Droussiotis joins this year’s Kypria Festival with a personal, contemporary, visual reading of Faust in which physical bodily expression is on par with the tour de force that are Goethe’s words.

Curriculum Vitae:
Born in Limassol in 1984, Stephanos Droussiotis’ lifelong passion for music began with his first piano lessons. By 1993, he met the pianist Tania Economou, with whom he trained for 10 years.

After a series of masterclasses in Germany and a subsequent two year study period with Prof. Irina Edelstein in 2001; Stephanos spent four years under the guidance of internationally acclaimed pianist Franz Vorraber and graduated in 2006 from the Academy of Music and performing Arts in Frankfurt.

In October 2004, he seized the opportunity to represent the State of Hesse at a private concert in Vienna, as a guest of the German ambassador. In March 2006, his solo performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto Nr. 1 was hailed by music critic Richard Hörnicke who wrote: "in his outstanding performance of Romance, Stephanos Droussiotis has reached the most elevated mode of artistic expression".

Further to his music studies, Stephanos followed a degree in Theatre Studies at the University of Athens where he graduated in 2010.

In 2009, Stephanos was selected to join a group of 60 artists from all over the world, and spent a summer in New York's Watermill Centre Arts programme, with the support and supervision of Robert Wilson. During the programme, Stephanos became actively involved in the creative endeavours behind Robert Wilson's projects for the 2010-2011 season. Through their collaboration, Stephanos also presented a performance for the 'Inferno Watermill Benefit Gala 2009'. Around the same time, he joined the creative team behind Monteverdi's opera 'Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria' for Milan's La Scala; as well as worked for the world premiere of 'KOOL, dancing in my mind', at the Guild Hall Theatre East Hampton in New York as a Production Assistant (directed by Robert Wilson).

In 2009, Stephano's joined Dimitri Papaioannou’s Greek project 'Pouthena'(Nowhere), where he also served as a Production Assistant.

Stephanos’ return to Cyprus in 2010 marked his directorial debut in theatre. His conception and direction of 'INCAMERA', a play based on J.P. Sartre's 'No Exit' was followed by Greek playwright Iacovos Kambanellis’ 'Letter to Orestes'.
