TERPANDROS -Ancient Greek Music Instruments Ensemble

The music culture of Cyprus, the language and its historical route as well, belong nationally in the wider Greek culture, since Cyprus was habited by Greek Mycenaean 4000 years ago. The music elements of this culture survived and travelled diachronically for thousands years, through the various musical idioms (ancient Greek music, Byzantine music, traditional songs and folk music) up to our days, rendering the music of Cyprus as a rich artistic creation.

Some of the music instruments used by the orchestra are formix , kochlos , sambyki, varvitos etc. These are unique regenerations of ancient Greek instruments and are the result of long-lasting inquiring work of Professor Michalis Georgiou.

“Erotocritos”
by Vincenzo Cornaro
Theatrical Workshop of the University of Cyprus

Adaptation, stage direction: Michalis Pieris
Music: Choral parts and songs: Christos Pittas
Music: Instrumental accompaniments: Antonis Xylouris - Psarantonis
Set and props: Christos Lysiotis
Costumes: Marina Kleanthous, Christos Lysiotis
Lighting: Carolina Spyrou
Production manager, assistant director: Stamatia Laoumtzi
Song instruction: Nikolas Papageorgiou
Sound supervision: Stamatia Laoumtzi
Technical support: Kyriakos Kakoullis

One of the most successful theatrical productions of THEPAK, which received high critical acclaim and has been recognised as a standard-setting event for the onstage interpretation of “Erotocritos” as it sheds a new light on this masterpiece of Cretan Renaissance that differs from the approach followed in other similar attempts. The performance has been presented more than 50 times in Cyprus, Greece, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, as well as in Italy where it was performed partly in Italian as a reward of sorts to Western European literary tradition that incited the remarkable literary efflorescence in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Crete, which proved essential for the future development of Modern Greek literature.
This fall the play will be performed at the Ayia Napa Medieval Festival.

This is the best performance of “Erotocritos” I have ever seen, with the right balance between symbolic and realistic elements, with simple set and costumes (that give precedence to the spoken word), with truthful acting and accurate articulation of the verses (the Achilles’ heel of other performances of Cretan literary works), with proper use of theatrical devices, with nice innovations such as the introduction of choreography and movement that underpin the action, with good and touching music played at the right time. I liked even the Cypriot accent that could be felt from time to time.
Stylianos Alexiou, Professor Emeritus,
University of Crete, Heraklion, 28 August 2005

Each attempt by the Cyprus University students to bring to stage classical literary works constitutes a genuine contribution to pedagogy. After Leontios Machairas’s “Chronicle”, the poet, researcher and university professor Michalis Pieris came to Athens with a production of “Erotocritos”. The edification of the young, but also the innovative onstage adaptation of this ground-breaking and voluminous classical work, were the main aspiration of the whole enterprise. The challenging adaptation, which could certainly be staged by professional theatre companies in the future, compresses the epic elements of the original in such a way that a new form emerges, based primarily on the erotic and lyrical aspects and merely complemented by the otherwise theatrically demanding and naturalistic battle scenes. […] The performance is structured more or less as an epic opera in which Cornaro’s style and language function harmoniously in a familiar setting. The decision to assign the role of Aretousa to three actresses and that of Erotocritos to two actors added dramatic mobility and rhythmological consistency to the performance”.

Psarantonis
“…The hum of the earth and the rumble of the wind…”

Erotokritos

Antonis Xylouris –Psarantonis: Various Cretan lyres, Tzouras, mandolin, vocals
Niki Xylouri: pitcher, drum, vocals
Giorgis Xylouris: lute, vocals
Lambis Xylouris: oud
Nektarios Kontoyiannis: lute

Among the personal quest, the feverish effort to free himself from the anxiety of expression, and the allegiance to the uninterrupted musical tradition of his land, Psarantonis struggles and finds his way with the instinct of the true artist. He collects brilliant lyrics (rizitika, traditional and modern mantinades), he charges them with his own expressive means, and with his matchless power of improvisation, he manages to create an atmosphere of awe, agitation and trepidation, just like the great musicians of Jazz.

Psarantonis believes that old and new can coexist in a new composition or simply in a new performance, in a new musical reality created by the new “tumult”, the new trepidation an endowed artist can give to what has been passed down the generations.

The unfailing vitality, the ceremonial functionality, the deeply felt loyalty to the values of the living tradition, and the need for a journey through past and present, are the main features of Psarantonis’ music genius. His concerts are never the same, the experience can never be anticipated, as with every touch of the strings he brings out something new and unexpected. Nothing is still, nothing is fixed in his musical world.

This year, Psarantonis returns to Cyprus (at the Ayia Napa Medieval Festival) to take us to a musical journey into his oeuvre, with traditional (Medieval and Renaissance) and contemporary songs, as well as rebetiko compositions and folk songs from Greece, Asia Minor and Cyprus. He will be joined on stage by Niki Xilouri with the unique timbre of her deep and soulful voice, and the sensitivity with which she plays the percussions, Giorgis and Lambis Xylouris with their profound knowledge of the fine art of the lute and the oud, and the virtuoso lute player Nektarios Kontoyannis.
