33 Years later - Spyros Chryssi Demetriades

I had my first exhibition in Larnaca 33 years ago, in December 1982. Time passed so fast that seems it was yesterday that I still painted in the various corners of the old town in October and November of 1982. Now I revisit the old streets and neighborhoods, where in the past I painted old neoclassic and other houses of importance and I feel am lost because these buildings of reference do not ever exist. In their place now stand multistory buildings hosting Banks and Hotels. Since then I have exhibited in Larnaca three more times. Last one was in Artemis Gallery in 2003.

My exhibition at “APOTHIKI 79” takes place on Friday the 13th of November, because my sincere friend Charis Karagiannis invited me to do so. I shall give also a talk with a slideshow about the way my inspiration leads me to the creation of new paintings, as well on Thursday 19th of November at 18:00. In the spaces of this remarkable complex of industrial architecture I present my most recent oil paintings based on my previous watercolors that I have made in 1982. Further I shall introduce to the Larnaca art lovers a selection of oil paintings of my last 5 years production and finally a series of Giclée Art Prints that will complete in one all-round way my presentation at “apothiki 79”.

SPYROS DEMETRIADES
A brief artistic CV

Spyros Demetriades who specialized in Animation (Diploma in Academic Painting, VŠUP, Prague, 1971-7) was born in Limassol, 1950. Organized 25 personal and participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad with his most recent exhibition in the New Premises of “CHRYSSES DEMETRIADES &Co LLC”, June 2013.

He exhibited watercolors and presented his book, “Limassol My Love” at “Zygos Gallery”, Athens (1982). He created animated commercials and educational movies and books’ Illustrations. He specialized in Computer Animation (UK 1992-3). He designed Stage sets and costumes and Cypriot memorial coins. He created silkscreen editions for hotels and navigation companies.

In 2001 he produced 22 Silkscreen editions for the decorative purposes of the “COLUMBIA, Beach Resorts at Pissouri. During 2009-2010 painted 16 mixed media pictures as a commission for “Intership Navigation Co Ltd then the artwork was printed as 16 silkscreen editions and then published in a book (“The Intership Navigation Collection, Sp. Demetriades, a life journey through Art”). In 2012 he produced “Cypriot Transfigurations” an innovative remake of his early animated film, Dur: 6 min. with a conclusion on a peaceful life in Cyprus.

Demetriades represented Cypriot artists’ of EKATE (Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts) abroad, in conferences and painting symposia. During his presidency of EKATE (2003-4) he focused on the bi-communal relationships and activities of Cypriot Artists.
