The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents (Paphos)

Dora was the pseudonym Freud gave to a young patient whose complaints of unwanted sexual attention from a family friend were concluded by the psychiatrist to be a symptom of hysteria. In this 2003 play by the Swiss writer Lukas Bärfuss, Dora is a young woman with learning difficulties who, when liberated from the medication that has kept her docile but deadened for years, displays a startling carnal curiosity and appetite.
Like Freud, who famously published a case study of his patient, this Dora’s recently deceased doctor exploited her for the sake of his professional reputation. Now Dora’s alarming, clear-eyed candour exposes the hypocrisy and moral confusion of those around her – and leaves Dora herself hazardously vulnerable.
