Ploutos

Cyprus : Ploutos

The theatrical team “Paravasis” produces the comedy of Aristophanes revised in the Cypriot dialect by Sophocles Sophocleous and directed by Marios Kakoullis. “Ploutos” is a masterpiece of ancient greek drama full of songs, dances and funny conversations. Most importantly though is the social meaning that gives and has to do with the fair division of wealth.

The plot
Chremylos invites in his home a blind, very poor old man, who turns to be “Ploutos” (wealth). According to his story he was blinded by Zeus, in order not to see to whom he gives wealth. Chremylos with the help of his friend Karion and the people of Athens helps Ploutos see and Ploutos starts giving wealth only to the good and honest people. The goddess of Poverty though appears and tries with arguments to prove that if Ploutos continues giving the wealth to the poor people, then they will become lazy and nobody will be willing to do the hard jobs of the daily life. Finally Ploutos wins and celebrates with the poor people their victory against poverty.
