Persephone By Yiannis Ritsos

Cyprus : Persephone By Yiannis Ritsos

This poetic work by Yiannis Ritsos is based on the myth of the rapture of the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of growth and fertility, responsible for the good harvest and Zeus’ sister. One day, Persephone, together with the goddess Athena, Artemis and the Oceanian nymphs, were gathering flowers on the Nysian Field. Carefree, Persephone moved away from her company, seeking the most beautiful flower. The moment she leaned to catch a daffodil, the earth was split in half, and a chariot with Pluto came up grabbing Persephone. Deeply saddened, Goddess Demeter had all the earth dried, and the flowers no longer flourished; she demanded from Pluto that Persephone be returned, otherwise she would not let the earth re-grow. Zeus, motivated by the starving people’s supplications, ordered Pluto to free Persephone. Pluto did not want to lose his beloved, so they ended up in a settlement -- Persephone staying on Earth for 6 months with her mother and 6 in the underworld with him –in order to further secure this, he gave her to eat pomegranate so as to come back, for whosoever ate the fruit in the underworld dwelt there.

Plot: Poetic monologue from the poet’s collection "Fourth Dimension". The poet, having as a starting point the ancient Greek myth, as is the case in most of the collection’s poems, writes a poem about the existential drama of life, eternally repeated in space and time. The “Persephone” masterpiece deals with our inner struggle between light and darkness, positivity and pessimism. It is a hymn to love both in its spiritual and in its flesh existence. The image of the contrast between light and darkness returns continually throughout the poem, either with a description or as a metaphor. The poet creates a dark atmosphere, mystical in its entirety yet intensively erotic. He invites us to a reconciliation with those aspects of the self that rest in darkness.
