Nicholas Panayi

Nicholas Panayi, successful and award winning painter from Nicosia, returns to Polis Chrysochous to exhibit his latest work. Panayi’s work retains a rich emotionalism expressed though vivid contrasts of line, surface and texture. Mainly figurative, the work tends to express the internal struggle of humans as a refining process towards spiritual liberation. The internal borders of divided Cyprus and the emotional turmoil of both the Greek and Turkish communities as well as other world events involving human suffering evoke sparks of creativity in the artist.

Within this theme, the work of Nicholas Panayi undergoes continuous transformation. Last year Panayi worked on the theme ”transparent walls” which part of he exhibited in Istanbul and part in Paris were he incorporated photography with painting dealing with social and political issues in controversial communities. And his current project is called “Immigrants”, dealing with the position of immigrants in Cyprus as well as in other parts of the world.

Nicholas Panayi lives and works in Nicosia. He studied Fine Art at The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. It was also in Prague were he first exhibited in 1988. This exhibition is the first of an impressive list of solo and group exhibition held in Cyprus and abroad (Paris, Beijing, Geneva, Istanbul). As an active member of the cultural scene in Cyprus, Nicholas Panayi holds lectures and participates in various cultural organizations and projects.

Politician Takis Hatzigeorgiou, now member of the European Parliament, will open the exhibition on Saturday, 1st of August at 8PM.
