Anthony Caro - Sheila Girling

Cyprus : Anthony Caro - Sheila Girling

Gallery K is exceptionally honoured to be representing Anthony Caro and Sheila Girling in Cyprus. Caro is widely regarded as the greatest living British sculptor and as having played a pivotal role in the development of twentieth-century sculpture. Major exhibitions include retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1975), the Trajan Markets, Rome (1992), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1995) and Tate Britain, London (2005). He has been awarded many prizes, including the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in Tokyo in 1992 and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sculpture in 1997. He holds many honorary degrees from universities in the UK, USA and Europe. He was knighted in 1987 and received the Order of Merit in May 2000. Caro’s work can be found in countless Museums and important collections around the globe. Work by Caro’s wife Sheila Girling will be exhibited alongside Caro’s. Girling has been winning prizes for her painting since she was a student. She paints abstracts, working huge canvases with acrylics, and also experimenting with collage on smaller formats using paper and canvas. She is a painter of powerfully evocative images and is a subtle, suggestive colourist. Her paintings play with the stillness of vibrant architectural forms, using the layering of collage to evoke shadow. Sheila Girling exhibits annually in London and her work is in public collections in Germany, Canada, and Spain and in the Royal Collection in Windsor Castle.

The exhibition includes work by Anthony Caro that span four decades. Two major works are Dreambox and Slow March. Both exemplify Caro’s innovation to remove sculpture from its base, thus incorporating it directly into its environment. Dreambox will be displayed indoors and Slow March outdoors. A selection from Caro’s important series The Trojan War will also be included. These works are inspired by Homer’s Iliad and represent various ancient Greek Gods and Heroes through the use of ceramic, steel and wood. Eleven smaller sculptures will also be on show, five of which are from the Concerto series. Sheila Girling’s work in the exhibition is recent, executed between 2005-2009. Her pieces consist of two still-lifes: Friday Morning and Saturday Afternoon (both oils) and twelve collages, ten of which are named after English cathedrals and two after sentences from the Requiem Mass.

This exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with an introduction by Mary Rose Beaumont. It will be inaugurated by The Minister of Education and Culture, Andreas Demetriou. The exhibition is also under the auspices of the British Embassy in Cyprus, and the British High Commissioner, Matthew Kidd will be present at the exhibition inauguration.
