Cyprus : 2nd Avaton Music Festival

Promoting contemporary music, electronic music and the latest inventions in music domain today, Avaton Music Festival 2010, organized by the Avaton Music Festival Committee under the artistic direction of Anita Tomasevich, in collaboration with Culture in Action and supported by Event Pro Co Limited, Ministry of Education and Culture and Technohoros ETHAL Theater, will offer a series of concerts and lectures from the leading musicians, composers and ensembles in art music.

For the second edition of the Avaton Music Festival, we are proud to announce the participation of two guest composers:

Mr. Tychonas Michailides – a young Cypriot composer living in England whose work and recognition in the field of the electro-acoustic music is well known on the European cultural stage. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Birmingham Music Conservatory researching a human-computer- interaction through sensor technology and real time sound processing. Mr. Michailides will give lecture on the subject - “Re-active musical systems using sensor technology”

Mr. Jonathan Green - from England (composer, pianist and sound engineer) - with special interest in musical interaction using motion capture technology. His music was performed at the major contemporary music festivals, such as, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Sight Sonic Digital Arts Festival, Leeds Lieder Festival, among others. Mr. Green will give a lecture on the subject of “Motion Capture Systems”

In addition to our guest composers, Avaton Music Festival 2010 is honored to present renowned musicians such as:
Mr. Gerard Bouwhuis (piano) from The Netherlands - a worldwide leading pianist in contemporary music.
As a soloist he appeared with the Schoenberg Ensemble, Asko, Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Residentie Orchestra, Ebony Band and the Xenakis Ensemble. Many leading composers in contemporary music wrote pieces especially for Mr. Bouwhuis, among others, Louis Andriessen, Guus Janssen, Paul Termos, Martijn Padding and Cornelis de Bondt. He is a member of LOOS and forms a piano duo with Cees van Zeeland. His career brought him through Europe, USA, South America, South Africa, Canada, Japan and Australia. As a soloist Bouwhuis performed at music festivals around the world, including “Almeida festival”, “Huddersfield festival”, “Holland festival”, “Bang On A Can” – New York, “Takefu” - Japan,” Meet the composer” Telluride U.S.A., “Wien Modern” and “Antwerpen 93”. His prolific discography includes over twenty albums, including, beside contemporary music, the music of Stravinsky, Debussy and J. S. Bach.

Mrs. Heleen Hulst (violin) - as a classical violinist Mrs. Hulst performs as a soloist and a chamber musician in major halls in Europe and she appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Radio Symphony Orchestra the Netherlands.
She has been a member of the Schoenberg Ensemble, Asko, Nieuw Ensemble, Remix Porto, Wendingen and l'Archibudelli. With these ensembles she toured through Europe, USA, Canada and Japan. She performed in the Tanglewood Music Festival (USA) where she was awarded the prize for ‘an outstanding violinist’.
She was a soloist with Peter Serkin and the London Sinfonietta conducted by Oliver Knussen in the Aldeburgh Festival. Her discography includes classical and contemporary music alike.

The Avaton Music Festival will also present Cypriot and Cyprus based renowned musicians– Agata Jozwik (piano), Georgios Georgiou (clarinet), Miriam Butler (bassoon), Sorin Alexandru Horlea (violin), Marios Nicolaou (percussion), Ayis Ioannides (conductor), Yiannis Miralis (saxophone), Virginie Bove(flute),Charis Ioannou (saxophone), Margarita Elia (soprano), among others.

The festival will take place on 10th, 11th and 12th of September in Technohoros ETHAL Theater in Limassol.
