Voices of the Poets - An evening of Greek Music

Cyprus : Voices of the Poets - An evening of Greek Music

An evening dedicated to poetry set to music, a musical tribute to the great poets, starting from the classics Papadiamantis and Elytis to the more contemporary Gatsos and M. Eleftheriou, whose words were amalgamated with melodies producing songs that are now weaved into the Greek cultural heritage. Through their own orchestrations and renditions, Maria Avraam (flute), Pantelitsa Socratous (piano) and Georgia Zachariade (voice) present a journey through the familiar melodies of Greek music at Technopolis 20, on Friday, 13th of April 2018, at 8pm.

One of the main characteristics that make Greek Music so distinct, is the poetic tone of its lyrics. This is mainly owed to Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis who brought poetry to the streets, making sure that it was no longer a privilege of the educated few to know the works of Elytis, Seferis and Ritsos. Later composers lead with their example, by setting existing poems to music and poets writing lyrics thus enriching the Greek music with a poetic mood, creating the genre that is now called “Entehno”.
