Leonce and Lena

Following up on the successful production and the enthusiastic critical reception of A Respectable Wedding (2015) and Nitsa (2016), Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble presents, for the first time in Cyprus, under the direction of Paris Erotokritou, Georg Büchner’s legendary satire, Leonce and Lena.

Prince Leonce spends countless hours in his bedroom. Bored and restricted by social norms befitting a prince, he invents worlds. This is a prince who feels, as he puts it himself, young in an old world. Leonce’s father – the King – insists on marrying Leonce to Lena, a Princess whom Leonce has never seen before. The story unfolds as Leonce organises his escape with the help of a friend, who appears to his room suddenly, and settles in Italy, where he meets and falls in love with a girl who appears, to all intents and purposes, as a chance acquaintance. Curiously, the marriage seems inevitable.
 
Transporting the story of Leonce to the present day, and having the action take place in Leonce’s teenage room, Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble explores the evolution of Leonce from a restless teenager to a man struggling to break out of the restrictive and suffocating environment in which he grew up. Leonce and Lena becomes a commentary on fate, will, and what it takes to forego roles and rules that are not chosen by ourselves.
